The Western Hills Wine Society was established in August 1983 with the prime objective of furthering the appreciation and enjoyment of wine.
The club meets at 7:30 pm for 8:00 pm on the first Wednesday in the month between February and November inclusive. Meetings take place at the Maungaraki Community Centre, 135 Dowse Drive, Maungaraki, Lower Hutt.
Usually in August we don't have a formal tasting but host our annual dinner at a restaurant serving wine friendly food.
In place of the December meeting the club holds a Christmas function - in recent years an afternoon barbecue.
Meetings typically commence with a wine pre-taster followed by a presentation consisting of 6-8 wines presented by winemakers or their agents. Crackers, breads and nuts are served to provide palate cleansing between tastes. The winemaker or agent will usually provide an opportunity to purchase the wines tasted on the evening at a discounted price.
A fee of $15.00 per person (including 2 raffle tickets) is charged to cover the cost of wines and snacks.
We are a small informal club providing a non-threatening environment to sample, enjoy and learn about a variety of interesting wines that members may not usually encounter.
